Our Tip: Driving and Car Insurance in Martinique

Driving in Martinique can sometimes hold a few surprises. To begin with, certain roads prove to be very winding and steep. Furthermore, parking spaces near the beaches are often quite narrow. That is exactly why we strongly recommend opting for full coverage insurance. When making your reservation on DiscoverCars, choosing comprehensive coverage ensures the reimbursement of your deductible in the event of a minor scrape. Ultimately, this allows you to explore the island with complete peace of mind, free from the risk of unpleasant surprises.

Hikes and Wild Nature Around Sainte-Anne

The Savane des Pétrifications and Étang des Salines

In the southern part of the municipality, the Savane des Pétrifications (Petrified Savanna) offers a surprisingly arid landscape. Indeed, the vegetation here appears much drier than in the rest of the island.

The trail winds through a vast expanse battered by the trade winds. Along the way, you will encounter cacti, sea grape trees, and astonishing rock formations. Afterward, the route leads toward the Étang des Salines, a protected salt pond boasting remarkable biodiversity. Mangroves and sea birds create a wonderfully peaceful setting here. Without a doubt, this is a must-do walk to discover a raw and exotic side of Martinique.

Practical tips: You can park your car along the D9 road near the bird observatory. From there, you can easily join the trail or head directly to Les Salines beach. Although the route has no elevation gain, it is extremely exposed to the sun. Therefore, be sure to bring plenty of water, a hat, and suitable walking shoes.

The Trace des Caps

It is impossible to stay in this area without exploring the famous Trace des Caps. This spectacular coastal trail runs along the southern Atlantic coast through a wide variety of landscapes. Consequently, you will alternate between steep cliffs, wild beaches, and lush mangroves.

The section connecting Macabou to Anse Grosse Roche is particularly remarkable. On this specific beach, an immense rock facing the crashing waves creates a grandiose setting. Although swimming is not recommended here, the spot is more than worth the detour.

Note: This coastline can sometimes see sargassum seaweed wash ashore depending on the season. Nevertheless, this does not diminish the striking beauty of this preserved coastal fringe.

Piton Crève-Coeur: A Short Hike with a 360-Degree View

Towering over the region, Piton Crève-Cœur offers one of the most accessible hikes in the area. The ascent begins amidst dry vegetation and quickly becomes more intense. Expect to put in about 30 minutes of effort to reach the summit.

Once at the top, the 360-degree panorama over the Atlantic coast is simply spectacular. We suggest an early morning departure to avoid the heat and enjoy gorgeous morning light.

The Most Beautiful Beaches in Sainte-Anne and the South

The southern part of the island offers magnificent white-sand beaches. In reality, they look like true postcards and perfectly reinforce Martinique’s paradisiacal image.

Here are the three beaches we highly recommend during your visit to Sainte-Anne:

  • First, it is impossible to visit Sainte-Anne without discovering the famous Plage des Salines, widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Martinique. With its immense stretch of white sand fringed by coconut palms, the scenery feels almost surreal. The waters here are calm, translucent, and incredibly pleasant for swimming. Despite its massive popularity, the beach maintains a sense of space due to its length. The atmosphere remains friendly, shared among traditional picnic shelters (carbets), small Creole restaurants, and families enjoying the day.

  • Closer to the village center, the Sainte-Anne Municipal Beach offers a much more lively atmosphere. Easy to access, it appeals to visitors with its shallow waters and bustling environment. The nearby waterfront, restaurants, and local market greatly enhance its pleasant and practical appeal.

  • Finally, for a more discreet vibe, head over to Anse Caritan. This small, more confidential beach is nestled in a calm bay surrounded by lush vegetation. The setting here is peaceful and almost intimate. The generally calm water allows for a lovely swim, especially late in the day when the lighting becomes softer. Ultimately, it is an excellent alternative to escape the crowds of the more famous beaches for a while.

During your stay, take full advantage of the maritime activities to explore the southern lagoons.

Indeed, “Le Roi Mongin” is one of the most well-known providers in Sainte-Anne for this specific type of excursion. Therefore, be sure to check out their website and book your activity in advance.

  • Stand-up Paddleboarding at Les Salines: Alternatively, rent a paddleboard to glide peacefully over the calm waters of the lagoon. In fact, this is an ideal activity to combine pure relaxation with a bit of sporty discovery.
