Perched in a lush green setting directly facing the ocean, they will truly make you travel back in time. Ultimately, this remarkable site bears witness to Martinique’s complex past and history.

Hiking the Caravelle Peninsula Nature Reserve
Intense and wild: these are the two words that best describe this specific hike. To this day, it remains the most beautiful walk we have experienced during our Martinican stay. Nevertheless, make no mistake about it. This is a demanding itinerary that requires solid preparation.
Where to Park to Start Your Hike?Widget Éditeur de texte :
A single road winds all the way to the very tip of the peninsula. Simply follow the signs until you reach the departure parking lot. Keep in mind that the final dirt track is particularly rocky. Since the parking area fills up quickly, arrive early or park carefully along the access road.
How to Properly Prepare for Your Hike?
This trail ranges from an intermediate to difficult level. Its main difficulty lies in its direct, intense exposure to the Caribbean sun. To set off with peace of mind, we strongly recommend bringing:
Good, closed-toe hiking shoes;
A large quantity of fresh drinking water;
Energy snacks or a gourmet picnic;
A hat and high-SPF sunscreen.
What Are the Possible Itineraries?
The Lighthouse Route (1.5 hrs round trip): The shortest option consists of walking out and back to the historic lighthouse. The final climb does require a bit of effort. Once at the top, however, you will enjoy an exceptional 360-degree panorama.
The Large Loop (6.2 miles / 10 km – 4 hrs): Featuring roughly 820 feet (250 meters) of elevation gain, this trail proves to be the most impressive. It traverses highly varied landscapes, shifting dramatically from dense mangroves to steep cliffs battered by the Atlantic Ocean.
The Short Trail (4 miles / 6.5 km – 2.5 hrs): A great alternative allows you to cut directly through the mangrove to reduce the overall distance. Conveniently, signs on-site clearly indicate this shortcut.
Where to Eat After Your Caravelle Hike?
After such an intense physical effort, head straight to the Le Phare restaurant, which acts as a true haven of peace. We particularly appreciate its tastefully arranged, shaded terrace facing the sea.
The menu highlights fresh local products cooked with immense originality and finesse. Moreover, do not miss out on their huge homemade artisanal ice creams! The service here is always smiling, welcoming, and efficient.
Admire the Viewpoints over Galion Bay and the Wild Coast
Oiseau Moqueur Viewpoint: Located right at the beginning of the peninsula, this spot offers a superb panorama over La Trinité and the wild coastline. A lovely artistic structure allows you to beautifully immortalize your visit.
Morne Papillon Viewpoint: Much more secret, this spot situated on the heights of Tartane is well worth the detour. It unveils a breathtaking view over Galion Bay and the distant lighthouse.
Enjoy the Sunset from the G. Hardy Distillery Rooftop
Are you a sunset lover? If so, we suggest pairing it with a great cocktail and some shareable tapas on this fabulous rooftop, which offers a breathtaking view over Tartane beach. Ultimately, it is the perfect way to quietly enjoy a beautiful Martinican late afternoon.
If you are won over by Hardy rums, an on-site boutique allows you to leave with bottles packed directly in your suitcase! Be sure to check the G. Hardy distillery website for hours.
Stroll Through Tartane and Enjoy Its Beaches
Tartane is a village that has wonderfully preserved its soul and authentic atmosphere. Along the main road, you can witness genuine scenes of local life, especially in the morning during the lively fish auction and bustling merchant stalls.
Additionally, Tartane boasts numerous establishments where you can sit down for a drink, grab a quick bite, or enjoy a full restaurant meal. Otherwise, you can practice water sports or simply relax on the beaches, which all enjoy superb natural scenery. To date, here are our two favorite beaches:
Plage de Tartane (Tartane Beach): Directly accessible from the roadside, this beach is incredibly pleasant for relaxing, offering numerous shaded spots. Here, you won’t find a perfectly flat “glassy sea,” but rather a lively ocean that moves according to the weather conditions.
Anse l’Étang Beach: Much more confidential, this beach is a massive personal favorite because it features plenty of shaded spots where you can settle down quietly. Swimming here is highly pleasant, and the location is rarely crowded. Either before or after your swim, you can confidently head over to the Filao terrace. Both the service and the setting are delightful. Regarding the menu, you will be spoiled for choice with dishes mainly focused on highly flavorful local recipes. Their Planteur rum punch is absolutely to die for!
